Cold Water Shock and the 1-10-1 rule. Cold water shock can affect YOU in water temps 70 degrees and below.
1-One minute. For the first minute after immersion YOU will gasp and breathe uncontrollably fast. During this period try to calm yourself and make a plan for self-rescue.
10-10 minutes of functional time. YOU will only have about 10 minutes of functional time to effect self-rescue.
1-YOU will slowly lose the ability to move, core body temperature will drop and unconsciousness will follow.
Without a PFD the ability survive each of the above phases is greatly diminished.
